machinery : Bavelloni Egar 323-5 N

Developments in machinery to make stonemasonry workshops more productive have been fast and furious over the past few years. So Natural Stone Specialist begins a new series that will focus on one particular machine each month. We start with the Bavelloni Egar 323-5 N CNC workcentre.

Main features of the Egar 323-5 N

General: Part of the N-series, Egar 323-5 N is a high-technology machine capable of working large slabs up to 3m long x 2.3m wide.

Capabilities: drilling, milling, internal and external edging, lettering. Options to allow: inclined kitchen tops with polished finish of both tops and inside edges and, using a kit to machine a slanted plane, produce an inclined drainer; machining of sinks from a solid block of stone; straight line and shaped saw cutting; bass-relief carving and engraving.

Physical configuration: open top and sliding doors front and back to facilitate loading and unloading operations. The Egar 323 has three linear axes, X, Y, Y’, Z (with transmission by means of tempered and rectified ball screws to enable movement up to 36m/min), a slanting B axis and a rotating C axis. All moving parts have a centralized lubrication system.

Work surface: stainless Duralumin, an aluminium / copper alloy used for precision tools because of its light weight and strength.

Tool handling: A patented system allows wheels to be stacked with different wheels up to 75mm, reducing the number of tool changes needed to perform a task. There are 13+7 tool positions, but as two or more wheels can be fitted on each cone the tool store can hold more than 40 different wheels.

Motor: Spindle motor with constant maximum output of 9.6kW (13HP), even from 1,500rpm. Torque is up to 35Nm – high torque means greater working speed and the ability to use larger diameter wheels. Speed goes up to 9,000rpm. The spindle is separated from the motor with toothed belt transmission for long life and easy maintenance. It is water cooled both inside and outside the tool.

Work head: The working head is equipped with two controlled axes: a B axis with +/-5° automatic inclination of the head; a rotating C axis enabling the tool to rotate through a full 360°. The inclination of the head is governed by the computer and allows the processing of a slanted kitchen top (in conjunction with the relevant optional kit).

Thanks to the rotation of the C axis it is possible to cut curves with a convex saw (with the relevant optional device). The maximum diameter of the saw for curved cuts is 180mm (maximum depth of cut 45mm). Straight cuts (with the relevant option) can be made at any angle. The maximum diameter of the saw is  300mm (allowing cuts up to 80mm deep). Polished straight and shaped grooves can be produced with the relevant options to produce straight or shaped grooves up to a maximum width of 12mm.

Control: The control console combines numerical control with a Windows-based PC that can easily communicate with other PCs by disks and on-line. Among its features is the ability to determine the exact position of the piece to be worked. This considerably reduces set-up time. Shapes can be drawn using the system’s own CAD or imported from laser-scanned templates or other CAD systems (such as Autocad). The main features of the standard computer-aided manufacture package, Easy-cam, developed by Bavelloni, include an automatic check to ensure the machine is capable of producing the piece and an estimated calculation of production time and costs.
